New Heart English Bible (NHEB)Today's passages
Job 1
1There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God, and turned away from evil.
2There were born to him seven sons and three daughters.
3His possessions also were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.
4His sons went and held a feast in the house of each one on his birthday; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
5It was so, when the days of their feasting had run their course, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, "It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts." Job did so continually.
6Now it happened on the day when the God's sons came to present themselves before the Lord, that Satan also came among them.
7The Lord said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, "From going back and forth in the earth, and from walking up and down in it."
8The Lord said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant, Job? For there is none like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil."
9Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, "Does Job fear God for nothing?
10Haven't you made a hedge around him, and around his house, and around all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
11But put forth your hand now, and touch all that he has, and he will renounce you to your face."
12The Lord said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power. Only on himself do not put forth your hand." So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.
13It fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house,
14that there came a messenger to Job, and said, "The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys feeding beside them,
15and the Sabeans attacked, and took them away. Yes, they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you."
16While he was still speaking, there also came another, and said, "The fire of God has fallen from the sky, and has burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you."
17While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, "The Chaldeans made three bands, and swept down on the camels, and have taken them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you."
18While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, "Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house,
19and behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men, and they are dead. I alone have escaped to tell you."
20Then Job arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down on the ground, and worshiped.
21He said, "Naked I came out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord."
22In all this, Job did not sin, nor charge God with wrongdoing.
Job 2
1Again it happened on the day when the God's sons came to present themselves before the Lord, that Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord.
2The Lord said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the Lord, and said, "From going back and forth in the earth, and from walking up and down in it."
3The Lord said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? For there is none like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil. He still maintains his integrity, although you incited me against him, to ruin him without cause."
4Satan answered the Lord, and said, "Skin for skin. Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life.
5But put forth your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will renounce you to your face."
6The Lord said to Satan, "Behold, he is in your hand. Only spare his life."
7So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord, and struck Job with painful sores from the sole of his foot to his head.
8He took for himself a potsherd to scrape himself with, and he sat among the ashes.
9Then his wife said to him, "Do you still maintain your integrity? Renounce God, and die."
10But he said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?" In all this Job did not sin with his lips.
11Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that had come on him, they each came from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite, and they made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and to comfort him.
12When they lifted up their eyes from a distance, and did not recognize him, they raised their voices, and wept; and they each tore his robe, and sprinkled dust on their heads toward the sky.
13So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great.
Job 3
1After this Job opened his mouth, and cursed the day of his birth.
2Job answered:
3"Let the day perish in which I was born, the night which said, 'There is a boy conceived.'
4Let that day be darkness. Do not let God from above seek for it, neither let the light shine on it.
5Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it for their own. Let a cloud dwell on it. Let all that makes black the day terrify it.
6As for that night, let thick darkness seize on it. Let it not rejoice among the days of the year. Let it not come into the number of the months.
7Behold, let that night be barren. Let no joyful voice come therein.
8Let them curse it who curse the day, who are ready to rouse up leviathan.
9Let the stars of its twilight be dark. Let it look for light, but have none, neither let it see the eyelids of the morning,
10because it did not shut up the doors of my mother's womb, nor did it hide trouble from my eyes.
11"Why did I not die from the womb? Why did I not give up the spirit when my mother bore me?
12Why did the knees receive me? Or why the breast, that I should suck?
13For now should I have lain down and been quiet. I should have slept, then I would have been at rest,
14with kings and counselors of the earth, who built up waste places for themselves;
15or with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver:
16or as a hidden untimely birth I had not been, as infants who never saw light.
17There the wicked cease from troubling. There the weary are at rest.
18There the prisoners are at ease together. They do not hear the voice of the taskmaster.
19The small and the great are there. The servant is free from his master.
20"Why is light given to him who is in misery, life to the bitter in soul,
21Who long for death, but it doesn't come; and dig for it more than for hidden treasures,
22who rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?
23Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, whom God has hedged in?
24For my sighing comes before I eat. My groanings are poured out like water.
25For the thing which I fear comes on me, That which I am afraid of comes to me.
26I am not at ease, neither am I quiet, neither have I rest; but trouble comes."
Psalms 83
1God, do not keep silent. Do not keep silent, and do not be still, God.
2For, behold, your enemies are stirred up. Those who hate you have lifted up their heads.
3They conspire with cunning against your people. They plot against your cherished ones.
4"Come," they say, "and let's destroy them as a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more."
5For they have conspired together with one mind. They form an alliance against you.
6The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites; Moab, and the Hagrites;
7Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek; Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;
8Assyria also is joined with them. They have helped the children of Lot. Selah.
9Do to them as you did to Midian, as to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the river Kishon;
10who perished at Endor, who became as dung for the earth.
11Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb; yes, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna;
12who said, "Let us take possession of God's pasturelands."
13My God, make them like tumbleweed; like chaff before the wind.
14As the fire that burns the forest, as the flame that sets the mountains on fire,
15so pursue them with your tempest, and terrify them with your storm.
16Fill their faces with confusion, that they may seek your name, Lord.
17Let them be disappointed and dismayed forever. Yes, let them be confounded and perish;
18that they may know that you alone, whose name is the Lord, are the Most High over all the earth.
Proverbs 16
1The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.
2All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the Lord weighs the motives.
3Commit your deeds to the Lord, and your plans shall succeed.
4The Lord has made everything for its own end- yes, even the wicked for the day of evil.
5Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord: they shall certainly not be unpunished.
6By mercy and truth iniquity is atoned for. By the fear of the Lord men depart from evil.
7When a man's ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.
8Better is a little with righteousness, than great revenues with injustice.
9A man's heart plans his course, but the Lord directs his steps.
10Inspired judgments are on the lips of the king. He shall not betray his mouth.
11Honest balances and scales are the Lord's; all the weights in the bag are his work.
12It is an abomination for kings to do wrong, for the throne is established by righteousness.
13Righteous lips are the delight of kings. They value one who speaks the truth.
14The king's wrath is a messenger of death, but a wise man will pacify it.
15In the light of the king's face is life. His favor is like a cloud of the spring rain.
16How much better it is to get wisdom than gold! Yes, to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.
17The highway of the upright is to depart from evil. He who keeps his way preserves his soul.
18Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
19It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor, than to divide the plunder with the proud.
20He who heeds the Word finds prosperity. Whoever trusts in the Lord is blessed.
21The wise in heart shall be called prudent. Pleasantness of the lips promotes instruction.
22Understanding is a fountain of life to one who has it, but the punishment of fools is their folly.
23The heart of the wise instructs his mouth, and adds learning to his lips.
24Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.
25There is a way which seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.
26The appetite of the laboring man labors for him; for his mouth urges him on.
27A worthless man devises mischief. His speech is like a scorching fire.
28A perverse man stirs up strife. A whisperer separates close friends.
29A man of violence entices his neighbor, and leads him in a way that is not good.
30One who winks his eyes to plot perversities, one who compresses his lips, is bent on evil.
31Gray hair is a crown of glory. It is attained by a life of righteousness.
32One who is slow to anger is better than the mighty; one who rules his spirit, than he who takes a city.
33The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.
