Numbers 36

The heads of the fathers' households of the family of the children of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near, and spoke before Moses, and before the princes, the heads of the fathers' households of the children of Israel:

and they said, "The Lord commanded my lord to give the land for inheritance by lot to the children of Israel: and my lord was commanded by the Lord to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters.

If they are married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Israel, then will their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of our fathers, and will be added to the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they shall belong: so will it be taken away from the lot of our inheritance.

When the jubilee of the children of Israel shall be, then will their inheritance be added to the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they shall belong: so will their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers."

Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word of the Lord, saying, "The tribe of the sons of Joseph speaks right.

This is the thing which the Lord does command concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, Let them be married to whom they think best; only into the family of the tribe of their father shall they be married.

So shall no inheritance of the children of Israel remove from tribe to tribe; for the children of Israel shall all keep the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.

Every daughter who possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel shall be wife to one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel may possess every man the inheritance of his fathers.

So shall no inheritance remove from one tribe to another tribe; for the tribes of the children of Israel shall each keep his own inheritance."

The daughters of Zelophehad did as the Lord commanded Moses:

for Mahlah, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married to their father's brothers' sons.

They were married into the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph; and their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father.

These are the commandments and the ordinances which the Lord commanded by Moses to the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

Deuteronomy 1

These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah over against Suph, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.

It is eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh Barnea.

It happened in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spoke to the children of Israel, according to all that the Lord had given him in commandment to them;

after he had struck Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth, at Edrei.

Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, saying,

"The Lord our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying, You have lived long enough in this mountain:

turn, and take your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites, and to all the places near there, in the Arabah, in the hill country, and in the lowland, and in the Negev, and by the sea coast, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.

Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their seed after them."

I spoke to you at that time, saying, "I am not able to bear you myself alone:

The Lord your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are this day as the stars of the sky for multitude.

The Lord, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as you are, and bless you, as he has promised you!

How can I myself alone bear your encumbrance, and your burden, and your strife?

Take wise men of understanding and well known according to your tribes, and I will make them heads over you."

You answered me, and said, "The thing which you have spoken is good to do."

So I took the heads of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens, and officers, according to your tribes.

I commanded your judges at that time, saying, "Hear cases between your brothers, and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and the foreigner who is living with him.

You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike; you shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God's. The case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it."

I commanded you at that time all the things which you should do.

We traveled from Horeb, and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw, by the way to the hill country of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh Barnea.

I said to you, "You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which the Lord our God gives to us.

Behold, the Lord your God has set the land before you: go up, take possession, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has spoken to you; do not be afraid, neither be dismayed."

You came near to me everyone of you, and said, "Let us send men before us, that they may search the land for us, and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up, and the cities to which we shall come."

The thing pleased me well; and I took twelve men of you, one man for every tribe:

and they turned and went up into the hill country, and came to the valley of Eshcol, and spied it out.

They took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down to us, and brought us word again, and said, "It is a good land which the Lord our God gives to us."

Yet you wouldn't go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God:

and you murmured in your tents, and said, "Because the Lord hated us, he has brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.

Where are we going up? Our brothers have made our heart to melt, saying, 'The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fortified up to the sky; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.'"

Then I said to you, "Do not dread, neither be afraid of them.

The Lord your God who goes before you, he will fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes,

and in the wilderness, where you have seen how that the Lord your God bore you, as a man does bear his son, in all the way that you went, until you came to this place."

Yet in this thing you did not believe the Lord your God,

who went before you in the way, to seek you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to show you by what way you should go, and in the cloud by day.

The Lord heard the voice of your words, and was angry, and swore, saying,

"Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land, which I swore to give to your fathers,

except Caleb the son of Jephunneh: he shall see it; and to him will I give the land that he has trodden on, and to his children, because he has wholly followed the Lord."

Also the Lord was angry with me for your sakes, saying, "You also shall not go in there:

Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall go in there: encourage you him; for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.

Moreover your little ones, whom you said should be a prey, and your children, who this day have no knowledge of good or evil, they shall go in there, and to them will I give it, and they shall possess it.

But as for you, turn, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea."

Then you answered and said to me, "We have sinned against the Lord, we will go up and fight, according to all that the Lord our God commanded us." Every man of you put on his weapons of war, and presumed to go up into the hill country.

The Lord said to me, "Tell them, 'Do not go up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest you be struck before your enemies.'"

So I spoke to you, and you did not listen; but you rebelled against the commandment of the Lord, and were presumptuous, and went up into the hill country.

The Amorites, who lived in that hill country, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and beat you down in Seir, even to Hormah.

You returned and wept before the Lord; but the Lord did not listen to your voice, nor gave ear to you.

So you stayed in Kadesh many days, according to the days that you remained.

Psalms 77

My cry goes to God! Indeed, I cry to God for help, and for him to listen to me.

In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord. My hand was stretched out in the night, and did not get tired. My soul refused to be comforted.

I remember God, and I groan. I complain, and my spirit is overwhelmed. Selah.

You hold my eyelids open. I am so troubled that I can't speak.

I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.

I remember my song in the night. I consider in my own heart; my spirit diligently inquires:

"Will the Lord reject us forever? Will he be favorable no more?

Has his loving kindness vanished forever? Does his promise fail for generations?

Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he, in anger, withheld his compassion?" Selah.

Then I thought, "I will appeal to this: the years of the right hand of the Most High."

I will remember Yah's deeds; for I will remember your wonders of old.

I will also meditate on all your work, and consider your doings.

Your way, God, is in the sanctuary. What god is great like God?

You are the God who does wonders. You have made your strength known among the peoples.

You have redeemed your people with your arm, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.

The waters saw you, God. The waters saw you, and they writhed. The depths also convulsed.

The clouds poured out water. The skies resounded with thunder. Your arrows also flashed around.

The voice of your thunder was in the whirlwind. The lightnings lit up the world. The earth trembled and shook.

Your way was through the sea; your paths through the great waters. Your footsteps were not known.

You led your people like a flock, by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Proverbs 15

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouth of fools gush out folly.

The Lord's eyes are everywhere, keeping watch on the evil and the good.

A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but deceit in it crushes the spirit.

A fool despises his father's correction, but he who heeds reproof shows prudence.

In the house of the righteous is much treasure, but the income of the wicked brings trouble.

The lips of the wise spread knowledge; not so with the heart of fools.

The sacrifice made by the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but he loves him who follows after righteousness.

There is stern discipline for one who forsakes the way: whoever hates reproof shall die.

Sheol and Abaddon are before the Lord- how much more then the hearts of the children of men!

A scoffer doesn't love to be reproved; he will not go to the wise.

A glad heart makes a cheerful face; but an aching heart breaks the spirit.

The heart of one who has understanding seeks knowledge, but the mouths of fools feed on folly.

All the days of the afflicted are wretched, but one who has a cheerful heart enjoys a continual feast.

Better is little, with the fear of the Lord, than great treasure with trouble.

Better is a dinner of herbs, where love is, than a fattened calf with hatred.

A wrathful man stirs up contention, but one who is slow to anger appeases strife.

The way of the sluggard is like a thorn patch, but the path of the upright is a highway.

A wise son makes a father glad, but a foolish man despises his mother.

Folly is joy to one who is void of wisdom, but a man of understanding keeps his way straight.

Where there is no counsel, plans fail; but in a multitude of counselors they are established.

Joy comes to a man with the reply of his mouth. How good is a word at the right time!

The path of life leads upward for the wise, to keep him from going downward to Sheol.

The Lord will uproot the house of the proud, but he will keep the widow's borders intact.

The Lord detests the thoughts of the wicked, but the thoughts of the pure are pleasing.

He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house, but he who hates bribes will live.

The heart of the righteous weighs answers, but the mouth of the wicked gushes out evil.

The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous.

The light of the eyes rejoices the heart. Good news gives health to the bones.

The ear that listens to reproof lives, and will be at home among the wise.

He who refuses correction despises his own soul, but he who listens to reproof gets understanding.

The fear of the Lord teaches wisdom. Before honor is humility.
