Romans 9
1I tell the truth in Christ. I am not lying, my conscience testifying with me in the Holy Spirit,
2that I have great sorrow and unceasing pain in my heart.
3For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brothers' sake, my relatives according to the flesh,
4who are Israelites; whose is the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service, and the promises;
5of whom are the fathers, and from whom is Christ as concerning the flesh, who is over all, God, blessed forever. Amen.
6But it is not as though the word of God has come to nothing. For they are not all Israel, that are of Israel.
7Neither, because they are Abraham's seed, are they all children. But, "In Isaac will your seed be called."
8That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as a seed.
9For this is a word of promise, "At the appointed time I will come, and Sarah will have a son."
10Not only so, but Rebekah also conceived by one, by our father Isaac.
11For being not yet born, neither having done anything good or bad, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him who calls,
12it was said to her, "The elder will serve the younger."
13Even as it is written, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated."
14What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? May it never be!
15For he said to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion."
16So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who has mercy.
17For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, "For this very purpose I caused you to be raised up, that I might show in you my power, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth."
18So then, he has mercy on whom he desires, and he hardens whom he desires.
19You will say then to me, "Why does he still find fault? For who withstands his will?"
20But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed ask him who formed it, "Why did you make me like this?"
21Or hasn't the potter a right over the clay, from the same lump to make one part a vessel for honor, and another for dishonor?
22What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath made for destruction,
23and that he might make known the riches of his glory on vessels of mercy, which he prepared beforehand for glory,
24us, whom he also called, not from the Jews only, but also from the Gentiles?
25As he says also in Hosea, "I will call them 'my people,' which were not my people; and her 'beloved,' who was not beloved."
26"It will be that in the place where it was said to them, 'You are not my people,' There they will be called 'children of the living God.'"
27Isaiah cries out concerning Israel, "If the number of the sons of Israel are as the sand of the sea, it is the remnant who will be saved;
28for the Lord will fulfill his word completely and without delay upon the earth."
29As Isaiah has said before, "Unless the Lord of hosts had left us a seed, we would have become like Sodom, and would have been made like Gomorrah."
30What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, who did not follow after righteousness, attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith;
31but Israel, following after a law of righteousness, did not arrive at that law.
32Why? Because they did not seek it by faith, but as it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone;
33even as it is written, "Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and a rock that will make them fall; and no one who believes in him will be put to shame."
Psalms 59
1Deliver me from my enemies, my God. Set me on high from those who rise up against me.
2Deliver me from the workers of iniquity. Save me from the bloodthirsty men.
3For, behold, they lie in wait for my soul. The mighty gather themselves together against me, not for my disobedience, nor for my sin, Lord.
4I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me. Rise up, behold, and help me!
5You, Lord God of Hosts, the God of Israel, rouse yourself to punish the nations. Show no mercy to the wicked traitors. Selah.
6They return at evening, howling like dogs, and prowl around the city.
7Behold, they spew with their mouth. Swords are in their lips, "For," they say, "who hears us?"
8But you, Lord, laugh at them. You scoff at all the nations.
9Oh, my Strength, I watch for you, for God is my high tower.
10My God will go before me with his loving kindness. God will let me look at my enemies in triumph.
11Do not kill them, or my people may forget. Scatter them by your power, and bring them down, Lord our shield.
12For the sin of their mouth, and the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride, for the curses and lies which they utter.
13Consume them in wrath. Consume them, and they will be no more. Let them know that God rules in Jacob, to the ends of the earth. Selah.
14At evening let them return. Let them howl like a dog, and go around the city.
15They shall wander up and down for food, and wait all night if they aren't satisfied.
16But I will sing of your strength. Yes, I will sing aloud of your loving kindness in the morning. For you have been my high tower, a refuge in the day of my distress.
17To you, my strength, I will sing praises. For God is my high tower, the God of my mercy.
Proverbs 13
1A wise son listens to his father's instruction, but a scoffer doesn't listen to rebuke.
2By the fruit of his lips, a man enjoys good things; but the unfaithful crave violence.
3He who guards his mouth guards his soul. One who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.
4The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing, but the desire of the diligent shall be fully satisfied.
5A righteous man hates lies, but a wicked man brings shame and disgrace.
6Righteousness guards the way of integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner.
7There are some who pretend to be rich, yet have nothing. There are some who pretend to be poor, yet have great wealth.
8The ransom of a man's life is his riches, but the poor hear no threats.
9The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out.
10Pride only breeds quarrels, but with ones who take advice is wisdom.
11Wealth gained dishonestly dwindles away, but he who gathers by hand makes it grow.
12Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when longing is fulfilled, it is a tree of life.
13Whoever despises instruction will pay for it, but he who respects a command will be rewarded.
14The teaching of the wise is a spring of life, to turn from the snares of death.
15Good understanding wins favor; but the way of the unfaithful is hard.
16Every prudent man acts from knowledge, but a fool exposes folly.
17A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a trustworthy envoy gains healing.
18Poverty and shame come to him who refuses discipline, but he who heeds correction shall be honored.
19Longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but fools detest turning from evil.
20One who walks with wise men grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.
21Misfortune pursues sinners, but prosperity rewards the righteous.
22A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored for the righteous.
23An abundance of food is in poor people's fields, but injustice sweeps it away.
24One who spares the rod hates his son, but one who loves him is careful to discipline him.
25The righteous one eats to the satisfying of his soul, but the belly of the wicked goes hungry.
