2 Chronicles 14
1So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David; and Asa his son reigned in his place. In his days the land was quiet ten years.
2Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God:
3for he took away the foreign altars, and the high places, and broke down the pillars, and cut down the Asherim,
4and commanded Judah to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.
5Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the sun images: and the kingdom was quiet before him.
6He built fortified cities in Judah; for the land was quiet, and he had no war in those years, because the Lord had given him rest.
7For he said to Judah, "Let us build these cities, and make walls around them, with towers, gates, and bars. The land is yet before us, because we have sought the Lord our God; we have sought him, and he has given us rest on every side." So they built and prospered.
8Asa had an army that bore bucklers and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bore shields and drew bows, two hundred eighty thousand: all these were mighty men of valor.
9There came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an army of a million troops, and three hundred chariots; and he came to Mareshah.
10Then Asa went out to meet him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.
11Asa cried to the Lord his God, and said, "Lord, there is none besides you to help, between the mighty and him who has no strength. Help us, Lord our God; for we rely on you, and in your name are we come against this multitude. Lord, you are our God. Do not let man prevail against you."
12So the Lord struck the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled.
13Asa and the people who were with him pursued them to Gerar: and there fell of the Ethiopians so many that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before the Lord, and before his army; and they carried away very much booty.
14They struck all the cities around Gerar; for the fear of the Lord came on them: and they despoiled all the cities; for there was much spoil in them.
15They struck also the tents of livestock, and carried away sheep in abundance, and camels, and returned to Jerusalem.
2 Chronicles 15
1The Spirit of God came on Azariah the son of Oded:
2and he went out to meet Asa, and said to him, "Hear me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin! The Lord is with you, while you are with him; and if you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will forsake you.
3Now for a long time Israel was without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without law.
4But when in their distress they turned to the Lord, the God of Israel, and sought him, he was found by them.
5In those times there was no peace to him who went out, nor to him who came in; but great troubles were on all the inhabitants of the lands.
6They were broken in pieces, nation against nation, and city against city; for God troubled them with all adversity.
7But you be strong, and do not let your hands be slack; for your work shall be rewarded."
8When Asa heard these words, and the prophecy of Oded the prophet, he took courage, and put away the abominations out of all the land of Judah and Benjamin, and out of the cities which he had taken from the hill country of Ephraim; and he renewed the altar of the Lord, that was before the porch of the Lord.
9He gathered all Judah and Benjamin, and those who lived with them out of Ephraim and Manasseh, and out of Simeon: for they fell to him out of Israel in abundance, when they saw that the Lord his God was with him.
10So they gathered themselves together at Jerusalem in the third month, in the fifteenth year of the reign of Asa.
11They sacrificed to the Lord in that day, of the spoil which they had brought, seven hundred head of cattle and seven thousand sheep.
12They entered into the covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and with all their soul;
13and that whoever would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, should be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman.
14They swore to the Lord with a loud voice, and with shouting, and with trumpets, and with cornets.
15All Judah rejoiced at the oath; for they had sworn with all their heart, and sought him with their whole desire; and he was found of them: and the Lord gave them rest all around.
16Also Maacah, the mother of Asa the king, he removed from being queen, because she had made an abominable image for an Asherah; and Asa cut down her image, and made dust of it, and burnt it at the brook Kidron.
17But the high places were not taken away out of Israel: nevertheless the heart of Asa was perfect all his days.
18He brought into God's house the things that his father had dedicated, and that he himself had dedicated, silver, and gold, and vessels.
19There was no more war to the five and thirtieth year of the reign of Asa.
Psalms 41
1Blessed is he who considers the poor. The Lord will deliver him in the day of evil.
2The Lord will preserve him, and keep him alive. He shall be blessed on the earth, and he will not surrender him to the will of his enemies.
3The Lord will sustain him on his sickbed, and restore him from his bed of illness.
4I said, "Lord, have mercy on me! Heal me, for I have sinned against you."
5My enemies speak evil against me: "When will he die, and his name perish?"
6If he comes to see me, he speaks falsehood. His heart gathers iniquity to itself. When he goes abroad, he tells it.
7All who hate me whisper together against me. They imagine the worst for me.
8"An evil disease," they say, "has afflicted him. Now that he lies he shall rise up no more."
9Yes, my own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, who ate bread with me, has lifted up his heel against me.
10But you, Lord, have mercy on me, and raise me up, that I may repay them.
11By this I know that you delight in me, because my enemy doesn't triumph over me.
12As for me, you uphold me in my integrity, and set me in your presence forever.
13Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting and to everlasting! Amen and amen.
Proverbs 5
1My son, pay attention to my wisdom. Turn your ear to my understanding:
2that you may maintain discretion, that your lips may preserve knowledge.
3For the lips of an adulteress drip honey. Her mouth is smoother than oil,
4But in the end she is as bitter as wormwood, and as sharp as a two-edged sword.
5Her feet go down to death. Her steps lead straight to Sheol.
6She gives no thought to the way of life. Her ways are crooked, and she doesn't know it.
7Now therefore, my sons, listen to me. Do not depart from the words of my mouth.
8Remove your way far from her. Do not come near the door of her house,
9lest you give your honor to others, and your years to the cruel one;
10lest strangers feast on your wealth, and your labors enrich another man's house.
11You will groan at your latter end, when your flesh and your body are consumed,
12and say, "How I have hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;
13neither have I obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor turned my ear to those who instructed me!
14I have come to the brink of utter ruin, in the midst of the gathered assembly."
15Drink water out of your own cistern, running water out of your own well.
16Should your springs overflow in the streets, streams of water in the public squares?
17Let them be for yourself alone, not for strangers with you.
18Let your spring be blessed. Rejoice in the wife of your youth.
19A loving doe and a graceful deer- let her breasts satisfy you at all times. Be captivated always with her love.
20For why should you, my son, be captivated with an adulteress? Why embrace the bosom of another?
21For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord. He examines all his paths.
22The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare him. The cords of his sin hold him firmly.
23He will die for lack of instruction. In the greatness of his folly, he will go astray.
